Preface
Once upon a time...well, not really THAT long. Our roles in the story are both still college students now, and the story happened few years ago.
In a normal school, at least all the students and teachers who didn’t know the story thought so.
The secret of a mysterious girl was revealed because of an attack in the darkness.
Chapter 1
The bell rang right when I stepped into the classroom. When I arrived at my seat, I saw Roxanne smiling at me. Well, saying more clearly, laughing at me.
“You’re late, AGAIN!!” said Roxanne.
“Not exactly. The bell rang just when I came into the classroom.” I replied.
“Okay, okay. You aren’t late. And can we discuss about our report now?”
“Report?”
“You forget about it AGAIN, Cindy. You really need to try to get up earlier and get everything organized.” said Roxanne.
Suddenly, I remembered it. Hearing my loud sigh, Roxanne looked straight at me, laughing out loud again.
“I forgot to bring my paper!!!”
Chapter 2
“Let’s go home together.” After school, I asked Roxanne.
“No... not today.” She replied.
“Again?” I was surprised. We used to go home together. But for weeks, I hadn’t gone home with her.
“Maybe next time. I promise.” she emphasized. These days, she became REALLY, REALLY weird. I extremely wondered what made her become so abnormal.
With my school bag on my shoulders, I stepped out of the classroom, alone.
Chapter 3
Silent, thoroughly silent. A dark shadow flickered across under the bright moonlight. Her breath vibrated around the hallway, frightened.
She heard a low moan, and her bright-brown eyes were filled with fear. A moment later, her eyes turned to a deep, dark kind of black. The last thing she could feel was the endless pain and blood on her right wrist.
Chapter 4
Dawning, with the sunlight on my face, I opened my eyes, seeing someone pull me up kindly. But it seemed like the blood was still everywhere. Why were these kind and tender hands covered with blood?
I tried to raise my hands to rub my eyes. Why was I here? I’ve been attacked?
When I got the control of my body back, the person had disappeared in the foggy dawn.
Who was she? Absently, I saw my wet schoolbag drop by my side. All of the books fell all over the ground.
Also, I saw a man falling in the blood, unconsciously, dead.
I turned around to take my schoolbag. Not bearing the fierce, painful beat; once again, I fainted.
Chapter 5
When the alarm clock rang, I found myself in my own room, lying on bed.
What happened yesterday? I could rarely remember anything.
In my memory, everything seemed to be too strange to be real. I could only remember some indistinct figures. What did those people do?
Maybe it WAS only a dream. I tried to make myself believe the farfetched explanation. I almost, maybe just because I wanted to, believe it.
If the pain on my wrist wasn’t that hard.
Chapter 6
When I arrived at school, Roxanne was really strange. I meant, stranger than EVER. She didn’t even notice that I was absolutely late.
“Good morning. Ha, I’m really late today. Hello? Are you there?” I waved my hand, my left hand, in front of Roxanne.
“Roxanne? Stand up!” I imitated the sound of our classleader, pretending the teacher had come.
「Roxanne?
When I finally got her attention, I had nothing to talk to her.
I guessed that she wasn’t the only person who had a strange attitude.
Our first class that day was English. I took out my textbook, trying to ignore the pain on my hand. Roxanne stood up and told the teacher that she forgot her textbook.
Although it wasn’t the first strange thing happened those days, I was really shocked. Roxanne never forgot anything, and that was why she always made fun of my carelessness.
I looked into my schoolbag to get my pencil box, and found out there was an extra English textbook in my bag. I took it out, finding Roxanne’s name on the cover.
I raised my hand and told the teacher that I had brought her book home accidentally. The teacher asked Roxanne to sit down.
I turned the book around and gave it back to Roxanne. The little action made me see the obvious blood on the book.
Chapter 7
I stepped to the hallway in front of the old music classroom during the lunch break, trying to get some silence to think. No one would come here recently. But the day before, I took the shortcut to get to the front gate because the back one had been shut. Well, it was my fault because I sat by the field until the sunset, thinking about Roxanne.
I picked up a piece of paper and saw my own handwriting on it. I was pretty sure that it was in my folder before... before I dropped all of my stuff here yesterday.
Although it was still hard to believe, I couldn’t deny that everything was true.
I recalled last afternoon. I exactly remembered that I
saw Roxanne put all of her textbooks into her schoolbag, including the thickest English book. Why would her book be in my bag?
The truth seemed to be easy, but it was even harder for me to believe.
Chapter 8
I didn’t ask Roxanne to go home with me that day. I was rarely a well-organized person, and everything was such a mess then.
At first, I decided not to mention about that night ever, but Roxanne’s behavior started to change. She was no longer the temperate girl I had known.
Justice.
正義。
That was the only word I could think of when looking at her.
Well, the change was not bad at all, at least for those who were bullied.
She started to put all the oppressors into trouble.
With her intelligence, the good impression she left on teachers, and... the vigor that I had never seen before.
I was curious. The girl seemed to become a stranger; however, it also seemed that the part of her was always there.
Why?
In an afternoon, when I saw her rushing out of the classroom, I made up my mind.
I must figure out what happened to her.
Chapter 9
Soaring up into the air, I jumped down from the roof.
Deep black coat fluttered behind me. I was concealed into the darkness.
The “defender,” which had been passed down for generations, was hidden in the NSA. It consisted of three families, and their descendants served as the defenders. The candidates who passed the challenges of the elders could possess the family heirloom, and became the chief of the next generation.
On my waist, the chill of a silver gun dazzled. It was right the heirloom of our family, startling with the elaborate pattern of a dragon, and its unexpected weight. Every shot could puncture the deep heart of an enemy. It remained the strongest lethality of the three families.
15
There was an assignment from the headquarter tonight. I was commanded to hunt for a professional assassin called Yithia.
Jumping down from the roof, I vanished myself into a vacant, dark lane. Indistinctly, graceful steps circled around. Suddenly, something chilled-sharp pointed against my neck. I turned my head with calm. A phantasmic face half-covered with gloomy-long hair smiled. Palely, her skin was almost transparent under the moonlight. She let out mad laughter, and my ears were prickled.
The prey I was hunting for came herself. I smiled with satisfaction. Holding the gun on my waist, I was fully ready.
16
Easily, too effortlessly. I swiftly kicked her in a whirl, and hit precisely on her face. However, I hesitated while seeing her appearance.
My attack left a vivid-long mark on the fairy feature.
In a trance, she rushed rapidly. The reflection of a crimson light sparkled on the stiletto. My right arm bled in a flash. I tolerated the great pain and fired a shot.
My sight was blurred by the severe throb. Then, a sound on the ground. Maybe it was over. Yet, the blond hand flickered over my face. Within the following moment, she expired. It must be the last specialty of an assassin.
17
Chapter 10
Before I went home, it suddenly came into my mind that Roxanne’s birthday was around the corner. I changed my route and went downtown to purchase a present.
When I got into one of the stores, I found out that I couldn’t decide what to buy.
I was shocked because I once thought that we both knew everything about each other.
Maybe we used to be like that. I couldn’t stop thinking about her strange behavior. It seemed like there were two “Roxannes” in my mind. The way she used to be, and the girl in my daily life then.
Which one was real?
Even when I sat in front of my supper, I was still thinking about it.
18
I didn’t listen to my Studio Classroon, and went to bed right after I got into my bedroom. Suddenly an earthquake struck, and my dog went crazy. He ran into my room and tore my Studio Classroom. I indistinctly realized that something was going to happen, with the ripped up magazine on the floor.
(So... should I listen to it then?)
19
Chapter 11
Tonight is a great opportunity to take the action.
He murmured, with a cruel and proud smile.
Tonight is a great time for you to succumb to me, if you still think that “friend,” as a derisory concept, is more important than anything else.
You might not have understood that in this world, mine and yours,
Sentimental people have only one fate: failure, death.
I’ll let you understand it, with my hands. But…
I hope you have enough strength to please me, my little actress.
20
Chapter 12
Gasping, I put my gun back. Staring up at the moonlight.
A shadow of a stalwart man flickered over. While getting confused, a sudden idea came into my mind. The way he went......oh no! Cindy! What the hell was he going to do? My heart was filled with worries, and coldness. Speeding, speeding toward her, even though I was exhausted by the injury, and might not defend definitely.
The wind, scraping my bleeding face hurriedly. And the wound gleamed with bloody-red under the bright moonlight. It didn’t matter anymore, as I was shuttling on the roof tops.
Brightness, she lit up my life. “How could the world take my only light away?” I smiled bitterly. Tears dropped through my scarlet face, converted gorgeously into a crimson flower, and fell into the endless profound.
21
The man in my sight disappeared in a familiar alley. Here it was. I narrowed my eyes, Cindy’s home.
I jumped into the balcony of Cindy’s house. The windows were locked. Through the transparent glass, I looked at the man inside.
Robust in stature, his fully-built body was filled with muscles. Handsomeness wasn’t enough to describe his appearance. The only description could be used was charming, with something he shouldn’t possess: animosity and greediness, that was.
Jason, one of the defenders, was also a heir in my generation. He was a descendant of a declined family. However, everyone considered him the cruellest assassin.
“Here you are, Jason.” I said scornfully with my mouth sneering.
Jason。」
22
“Well, well, well. How calm you are.” He stopped to reply with satisfaction.
“How come? Why could you treat me like this?” I questioned him with my hand holding my gun tightly.
“How nasty it is! You are SO-CALLED the strongest heir of the defenders. Yet, you corrupted the organization JUST because of a nobody! What the heck do you think you are? The strongest defender? Silly!” He said resentfully with his face twisted, and his eyes full of hatred.
“The responsibility of the defender is to protect the civilians. Peace is our target of justice. What’s the problem of our friendship to the organization? But rather you, YOU sent the killer a few days ago, didn’t you?” I said with a deep breath.
23
“Well, you have already become aware of that? Thanks to your keen observation. We guys are defenders, once we have had any emotions, we couldn’t defeat enemies without any concern but to fail, only. Affection is useless to us! How stupid you are. Come to realize the truth, girl!” He said plausibly.
“You are wrong!” I answered angrily.
“Prove it to me!” He provoked.
Not reacting, a crack of the glass aroused my appetences of slaughter.
24
Chapter 13
When my window was broken with a loud noise, I was having a nightmare. In my dream, I tried to explain to my teacher that my Studio Classroom magazine had been broken because of my dog. But she didn’t believe me at all.
Roxanne raised her hands, “I can prove that, my dog destroyed it when Cindy came to my house, when the earthquake happened.”
“So... which dog did that?” The teacher patted the platform angrily. She was so angry about our “lie” that her cup fell off and broken.
Just as I heard the sound of the break of glass, someone shook my shoulders. “Wake up, Cindy! I have something to tell you.”
25
I opened my eyes, seeing Roxanne looking down at me. Another dream. I thought. It was impossible for a student to visit his or her classmates so late. Moreover, it was also impossible for my window behind her broken in pieces. I winked my eyes.
After a few seconds, she was still there. Well, the dream seemed too real to be a dream, maybe it was true. (By the way, according to my experience, I suggest the readers not to do logical thinking when you just wake up. It is impossible for you to think clearly.)
“What? Cindy, stop dreaming! It’s not the time for you to sleep.” She seemed to be anxious, losing the calm she always had.
Well, confession time. It was hard for me to listen to anyone when I was sleepy, of course including my best friend. “Why should I listen to you?” I replied.
26
She was surprised. But she decided to ignore my irrationality. “Did he hurt you?”
“Who?” Finally, I awoke.
“He.” She looked backward. Followed her sight, I saw a man lying behind her.
“Who is he?” I asked.
我問。
“It’s a long story.” She sighed, smiling bitterly.
“Then tell me. These days I really wondered that what our friendship became to you. Why do you hide so many things to me?” I needed to find out the reason for her change.
Again, she sighed. Her appearance seemed that she had accumulated vicissitudes for thousands of years.
Blood fell onto my face. “You’re hurt.” I said.
“Right.” She agreed. She incidentally effaced the blood over the wound on her cheek. “It doesn’t matter.”
27
“Listen. Our friendship is more than anything else for me. And that’s why I didn’t tell you anything. If you dislike me because of it, I won’t blame you. It’s necessary for your safety. But if you don’t, you will undoubtedly get into a real trouble, and your life would be threatened. I can’t bear losing our friendship. But both of the consequences would make me lose it. I always told myself that I was trying to defend you, but I knew I was cheating myself. It was all because of my selfishness. I childishly thought that if you didn’t know the secret of mine, you’d be totally safe. And I could unceasingly enjoy the kindness and friendship that I should never own.” Tears fell from her eyes; the warmth in her eyes astonished me.
It seemed like that she was looking at the only brightness in darkness.
28
Why? Who was the girl in front of me?
Feeling like a stranger, but made me want to give my life on her hands. A sense of dependence came out of the deepest of my mind, with the greatest fear.
“Watch out!” I shouted, the man behind her jumped up, nipping her neck.
29
Chapter 14
I broke the window with my gun. I shouldn’t have done that. But when I was standing outside Cindy’s bedroom, seeing the teasing, scornful smile on Jason’s face, anger had grabbed all of my self-control.
How could he do that? The relationship among the three families was usually in harmony.
In the past, there was only assistance among us. Our slaughters were only for justice, until now.
I looked over Jason’s shoulders. Cindy was still sleeping in her bed. The man with a sharp knife was standing beside her no more than one meter.
30
I was a “defender.” If I couldn’t protect the most important person of mine, then what’s the value of my life? NOTHING! I turned my gun around, hit the windows, and sent my foot to Jason’s astonished face. Luckily, he fainted right away.
“No... it was my dog. I... it’s real. I didn’t lie.” Cindy looked afraid, having a nightmare? I shook her shoulders, trying to wake her up.
“Wake up, Cindy! I have something to tell you.”
「Cindy,
“Why should I listen to you?” What? Why did Cindy say that? I wondered, but I had no time to find out the answer.
“Did he hurt you?” I asked nervously.
“Who?”
I looked back. Jason was still unconscious, so I put my attention back to Cindy.
31
“Who is he?” Cindy tried to look over me, trying to see more clearly.
What should I tell her? Jason? Defender? The cruellest killer I’ve ever known? Or someone who wants to kill you because of me?
Jason?
How should I tell her? “It’s a long story.” I told her.
She looked upset. “What does our friendship mean to you?”
More than my life. I thought.
I knew that I couldn’t escape that day. I must face my greatest fear: telling the truth to Cindy.
“You’re hurt.” I saw my blood dropping onto her face. I almost forgot about it.
I needed to explain to her. Right away. I must tell her all about my secret and how precious our friendship was to me.
32
Just when I was going to tell her the truth about my family, she became frightened. “WATCH OUT!!” She shouted. At the same time, I felt someone almost throttle me.

Chapter 15
Feeling stabbing pain, I realized that Jason cruelly pierced my back with a dagger; bloody-red glowed. I turned my head hastily, having a glance of Jason. He slowly accelerated his actions, strapping my neck tightly with his left hand.
Couldn’t breathe.
I hastened to hit his head with my gun. Feeling a burst of warmth, his head was cracked. The warm liquid sprayed over, drawing a scarlet poppy on the remaining glass.
Just then, the pain around my neck had disappeared. With all of my strength, I kicked Jason out of the windows. All he could do was struggling to support himself on the edge of the balcony. I pulled the trigger, aiming at his heart.
34
However, he, who shouldn’t have been able to move anymore, strove to avoid my bullet. I frowned, disdainfully.
Still have any strength? I thought.
Sweat pricked my eyes. I winked them to see more clearly. After I put my control back, an excited laughter struck me with the sense of victory. I hastily turned around, seeing Jason oppressed Cindy with his knife on her neck. Her face suddenly became pale, and it hurt me deeper than any injury on my own body. That wasn’t allowed! I determined, with a scream in my mind.
I immediately raised my gun and aimed at Jason’s heart; however, I saw threads of blood flew along Cindy’s blond skin. “Do you want to keep your friend alive? Or killing me is more desirable! Put down your gun, otherwise I surely cannot promise that this little girl would still be alive.” His voice vibrated around the narrow space outrageously, shaking the air about.
Jason’s hands were trembling because of the fight.
Resignedly, I made up the decision. I slowly put the gun onto the floor, trying to keep calm when I stood up and raised my hands over my head. “How smart you are! From now on, I’m the mightiest!” With the corners of his mouth up, he released his hand which was holding the knife, stepping to my gun.
Now! I got my gun up with my foot, catching it skillfully and squinted my eyes to aim at his heart. Passing by in front of Cindy’s fearful face, the silver bullet marked a track in the deadlocked night. It penetrated Jason firmly as it approached him. The red splashed out a deep silence under the moonlight. Stillness spread. Then, it was the sound of Jason’s collapse, physically and mentally. Speechlessly, I looked straight at him, at his unmovable body, just as the man who hurt Cindy that night.
36
How about Cindy? I anxiously checked whether she was fine or not. Her white clothes were dyed to a dazzling kind of red. And her eyes were filled with deadly fear. Whatever, she was alive. And I could relieve myself finally.
As my sight went down, there was also a shoal of dark-red liquid around me. Is that my blood?! Gradually, I felt myself becoming unconscious, with my eyes and ears unclear. The last thing I could feel was Cindy’s nervous scream. Enough, everything was enough. At least...at least she was still alive. Not expecting to awake next time, I fainted in my own blood unconsciously. With a weak smile on my face.
